President Lee, “Mifegyne introduction requires presidential decision”

Responds to question on women’s health rights and autonomy at Sept. 18 press conference

“Real reform means confronting contentious issues even at the cost of popularity and criticism”

President Jae Myung Lee said the controversy surrounding the introduction of the abortion drug Mifegyne and the scope of its permitted use in Korea is “a reform issue that requires a decision under the responsibility of the state, even if it brings backlash and criticism.”

Lee made clear that issues involving abortion medications such as Mifegyne and abortion itself could remain unresolved until the end of his term due to bureaucratic inaction unless he personally directs the government to act, adding that he intends to confront contentious issues even at the cost of popularity.

At a press conference on Sept. 18, Lee made the remarks in response to a question about “how the state should strike a balance between women’s health rights and their right to self-determination” in relation to Mifegyne.

Referring to the introduction of Mifegyne, Lee said, “There are cases where ministries cannot bring themselves to make a decision and end up doing nothing because they fear criticism from both sides. Mifegyne and abortion are major examples. If the president does not directly order action, the status quo could remain unchanged until the end of the presidential term.”

Lee also spoke candidly about the social backlash that would inevitably accompany the introduction of Mifegyne.

“When a decision is made on a contentious issue, opposition comes at 10 times the force of support, and I understand that the person making the decision can become the target of resentment. However, reform is about doing what the majority needs despite strong opposition of the minority.”

“I did not become president to seek authority, prestige, or the position itself. I became president to build a society where everyone can prosper together. I will not practice politics that cherry-picks only uncontroversial issues and packages them for public approval.”

Lee added, “That does not mean I will disregard the public’s clear-eyed disappointment and criticism. I will continue efforts to help the public understand the sincerity behind these decisions.”
